In contrast to many historical places which have become mere attractions, The Mirisawetiya current temple, under the able leadership of the high priest Ven. Eeathlwetunaweva Gnathilake Thero, is leading many community service projects in the area. The high priest clearly believes that the temple must be a service centre to the community and priests should lead the way in community service.
The Miriswetiya Community and Child Development Foundation

The Miriswetiya Community and Child Development Foundation is currently providing a yeoman service to the underprivileged children and villagers in the area and beyond. The High Priest of Mirisawetiya is the brains behind the foundation

Here are some of the activities of the Foundation
The Foundation headed by the High Priest is sponsoring very poor but talented schoolchildren in the area through their secondary and higher education.
You can help this project and make a real difference in a child's life
- Sponsoring gifted but poor schoolchildren
The temple selects courageous boys and girls in the area who are having difficulties and matches these students with sponsors who will help the child proceed through his or her education . The temple carefully selects the most needy children and children who have suffered under the following categories are handpicked.
As little as paying US$10 (Rs 1000) per month, you can help a talented but underprivileged child have the future he or she deserves.
The foundation has facilitated over 110 sponsorships given to students so far !.

Financial Support to children in war affected areas with good O. Level results
Seven Thousand students who obtained very good results in war-effected areas in areas such as Anuradhapura , Puttalam Vauniya in the North central province have been given school accessories enough for two years of study by the foundation.

- Samanala Children's society

The foundation established a children's society to over 180 children in the area called the “Samanala children's society” to train children on discipline, culture, manners and the Buddhist way of life. The society is presided by the children themselves. Among the objectives of the society are
- Teach children to respect parents.
- Teach meditation to children.
- Train children to observe Sil.
- Encourage students to organize Drama and singing sessions to bring about positive mind set.
- Train students to have religious ceremonies to observe family events such as birthdays.

The Foundation carried out a massive campaign in Trinco to Tsunami victims. Boats and other equipment needed to help the villagers to get back on their feet were provided. The foundation gifted, each student in five selected schools in Trinco, school appliances to help get back to studies.

- EWIS School scholarship programme 2007



With the sponsorship of EWIS, the foundation conducted a programme where 500 schoolchildren were given scholarships in the form of all equipment necessary for their education for 2 years.

- Making irrigation wells for villages

In another project, the foundation has constructed six irrigation wells to six villages to enhance agriculture. ^Top^

- Gift for the temples in the border villages to start functioning again

With the dawn of the peace process, 160 temples in the border villages were selected and everything ranging from tools, furniture to equipment were gifted for the temples to start and function again.

- 2007 Sinhala-Hindu new year



With the sponsorship of EWIS, the foundation conducted a programme where 250 families live in Thisawewa area were given some foods for 2007 Sinhala-Hindu new year.

Maha Sangha including Ven. Eethalawatuawawe Gnanthilake thero offering pirith nool (sacred thread) blessed by chanting pirith for 100,000 times to soldiers who were in the north battle field. On behalf of the SL Army General Sarath Fonseka, the SL Army Commander receiving those.

- “Dansala – 07th june 2009”
“Annual Poson Dansala” organized by the Mirisawetiya Temple, Anuradhapura was held on 07th June 2009, serving more than 11,000 pilgrims. This event is sponsored annually, by the country's IT Giant EWIS under its CSR initiative “e-Prajakirana”.
Esteemed personalities such as; Chief Minister – Anuradhapura ; Mr.Berty Premalal , Former Chief Justice Mr.Sarath.N.Silva , DIG of Police Mr Ashoka Jayathilake, Major General Nanda Udawaththe & few more top personalities were participated in the opening ceremony.
